A long-standing and popular live-broadcast New Zealand children's television show, "What Now" was looking to introduce a new interactive experience into its programme line-up.
Challenged with producing a robust live visual effects solution for limited budget and a compressed timeframe, we were able to develop a custom augmented reality implementation, running off a live video feed and low cost graphics server, to allow the show to produce a real-time game experience for dial-in viewers.
The solution incorporated "head-swapping" visuals along with a "chatter" effect in time with audio, to allow kids to play a "name the celebrity" game while watching the live broadcast at home. With up to 10 characters for each game, the solution had to support efficient graphics import and robust visual and audio processing, and integration with broadcast equipment.
The game has been successfully run since its first show, including operating in outdoor live broadcast environments.
